Projected results of the Lower Saxony election released a few hours ago 16 Oct

  • SDP 37.3% up from 32.6% prev
  • CDU 33.4%
  • Greens 8.9%
  • FDP 7.4%

Not been covered in Asia session so posting here for info.

I highlighted the event in a week-end post here and suggested the negative result will impact on her coalition talks with the FDP and Greens on Wednesday. If confirmed the result would be the poorest showing for the CDU in Lower Saxony in 58 years, following on from Merkel's weakened showing in the federal eletion 3 weeks ago

However Peter Tauber, the CDU's secretary general was putting a brave face on it, saying all three parties involved in national coalition talks had lost support in Lower Saxony, but dismissed the idea that the state vote would have a big impact on the talks.

"It wouldn't be wise to think this will weigh us down. We have a clear mandate and we take that very seriously and we are talking about serious and important topics ... that's why we're now talking seriously and looking forward."

Along with the shift in Austria's political landscape that I warned of in that same post and ongoing uncertainty in Spain/Catalonia it's understandable to see the euro undermined a little as the week gets underway.
