Anchoring Bias

Anchoring bias is a pervasive cognitive phenomenon in which individuals subconsciously become too reliant on the first information which they are given on a certain subject, thus narrowing their field of vision and decision-making capabilities. New information is then interpreted and filtered in light of the first reference point – or anchor to which we cling – which, in turn, skews our perception of reality.The anchoring bias is considered to be the reason behind several other known biases and is deeply rooted into the human brain.It is extremely difficult (if not completely impossible) to avoid.Individuals seem to even create anchors by themselves, as proposed by “the anchor-and-adjust hypothesis”.
