January is a terrible time to buy stocks
S&P 500 indications are pointing to a strong start to the year. Futures are up 13.6 points after a 10.4 point drop on the final trading day of 2016.
The index gained 9.54% last year -- all of it coming in the eight weeks since the US election.

The big reason not to buy the S&P 500 right now is the calendar. January is the worst month on the calendar for the S&P 500 and most major global market indexes.
The rule has held especially true for the past three years when declines averaged nearly 4%.
